Review and Giveaway of Expressiva Nursing Wear!

While the choices for Maternity Clothes are still ever present, it is so difficult to find good nursing clothes these days! Until recently I had never heard of Expressiva Wear Nursing Clothes! They design and sell nursing dresses, tops, nightgowns, bras, swimsuits, and even plus size nursing clothes! You can even find some tops made with 100% organic cotton.

I was sent the crocheted medallion top shirt to review in burgundy. I thought it was so pretty with the crocheted look, and the color will look so good with a black skirt. The shirt is very soft and comfortable. I ordered a size small, and while it fit me I should have went up one more size and ordered a medium so it would be more modest. The shirts are made from knit, so they tend to hug you a little more than I am used to.

Another top that is so pretty is the Dragonfly floral top! The colors look feminine.

Nursing shirts are so much easier to use, as you don't have to expose your stomach when you pull your shirt up while nursing. If you practice, you can even learn to nurse without a blanket using a nursing shirt.

Right now at Expressiva you can get free shipping when you spend $50!

Giveaway of Slow and Savory Supper E-book!

The Grocery Shrink Mom is not just another blog out there in the vast Internet world, she happens to be a friend of mine! Angela is blessed to be the mother of 5 children, and she is the most creative person I know! She can turn nothing into something! If you go to her website, you will find her promoting Dave Ramsey's philosophies-use cash, have a budget, and-what is obvious from her website, shrink your grocery bill! In her e-book she teaches you how to grocery shop on a budget, and includes some creative tips on where to find food for cheap!

Angela recently came out with a new e-book Slow and Savory Suppers, A Natural Slow Cooker Cookbook. I had the opportunity to review it, and it is wonderful! The e-book has 31 recipes that Angela has worked on creating over the past 2 years. They all use whole foods, and they look great! I have had some of the meals she has in her cookbook at potlucks, and they were quite yummy!

Almost every recipe has a full color photo beside the recipe so you can see what it is supposed to look like. The best part of this e-book? It is only $3.00!! I think it is worth every penny of that. I would pay that alone for the chicken and rice recipe in this book. I have been looking all over for a natural chicken and rice recipe for the crock pot that does not include a cream of chicken soup from the store. Look no further, it is in the e-book!

Buy It!
You can purchase this e-book at The Grocery Shrink.

Win It!
Angela is giving away a copy of the Slow and Savory Suppers E-book! To enter go, leave a comment letting us know how many times a week you use your slow cooker! This is required and must be done before the extra entries count!

Menu Plan for Week of June 28th

I'm planning on sitting down today and coming up with some good tweaking to our diet. I've had a consultation on eating healthier and want to get this into practice asap. We will be eating beef, chicken, and fish in moderation. Our veggie and fruit consumption will increase and I will only be using whole grains, no more white flour. Thankfully we have a co-op order coming up with our church so I can stock up on grains and brown rice as needed. I was advised to cut out sweets completely. I think I will stick to once a week, that seems pretty moderate to me. The Naturally Healthy Cuisine book will giving me some great help on modifying our food even more. I grew up eating much healthier than I have been so this won't be a great shock. That's a blessing! So next week I'll be posting a new improved healthier menu plan. Stay tuned!

Holiday Traditions: The 4th of July

Photo courtesy of Ace Clip Art

Do you have family holiday traditions? For you it can be the never ending, always familiar events that are special to your family. It could be the orange salad recipe that you have from great-grandma every Thanksgiving. Or maybe it’s the board game you play as a family every New Year’s Eve waiting for midnight to arrive. There is something comforting about family traditions. I want to give you some ideas about how to create your own family holiday traditions. I am going to focus on the fourth of July. As you read you can begin to think through, plan, and adapt some of these ideas to any holiday within the year.

My brother-in-law had decided to start a family holiday tradition for the fourth of July. He felt we were not focusing enough as families on the sacrifices our forefathers had made for the freedoms and blessings we enjoy in this land. Sean created a schedule for our day and asked everyone to come with a heart set on sharing together as families. Sean decided we should have a lecture every year. The lecture would be given with a lesson of our history and the hand of God upon our land.

My husband Neil gave the first “Landmark Lecture” as they will be called from here out. Those of us with musical talent were asked to share in a patriotic piano or vocal solo, or whatever patriotic artistic endeavor would be fitting to the occasion. The ladies provided all the food. Sean created many of the games for the day. Invitations were printed and given to each family coming.

The invitation was as follows:

A Day of Remembrance and Thanksgiving :4th of July Family Gathering

10:00 promptly You are cordially invited to share in this day of celebration and praise. We will be observing the birth of our Nation

The schedule of events is as follows…
~ 10:00- arrive at Mr. and Mrs. A’s home
~10:15-12:00- pastimes and Amusements
~12:30-1:30- A 4th of July Feast
~1:45-? 2006 “Landmark Lecture” (Prov. 22:28)
~?-3:00- Prayer Meeting
~3:00-3:45-Artistic displays of patriotism

Come with all the patriotic zeal and sincere feelings of gratitude for liberty that your native heart can muster. It will be a time to give thanks to God for the rich blessings we enjoy, as inheritors of this promised land through the nearly unappreciated sacrifices of our forefathers.

Our Pastimes and Amusements consisted of some clever water games created by Sean. We also played lawn bowling, hide-and-go-seek, wiffle ball, and other games through the day. We needed a time to calm down from our outside fun before the lecture and prayer. Lunch provided family sharing and a scrumptious meal of grilled chicken, hamburgers, and all the sides was served.

Our great first Landmark Lecture was followed by a prayer meeting where we were to focus our prayers in thanksgiving to God and in prayer on behalf of our nation. During our musical artistic displays we were given small American flags and blue “pom-pom” sticks to wave. (The children will enjoy this!) As we all waited to leave for the fireworks display we played a few more water balloon games.

Our celebration was held on a farm. The 4 wheeler and a golf cart were brought out for rides. All in all it seemed the consensus of those who attended that they had more fun in that one day than ever before.

Each holiday you can add decorations that are appropriate for that day. Special pictures can be drawn for or by the children. Scriptures, or notable quotes, can be written out or typed and be placed around the food and seating area as an extra remembrance of the holiday being celebrated. For this 4th of July celebration I had found quotes of the Founding Fathers that I wrote out on blue and red construction paper and placed in prominent places in the kitchen and on the tables for all to read. It would be a simple addition to the day that can be kept and reused the next year.

I will share the quotes I used:

“Before any man can be considered as a member of civil society, he must be considered a subject of the Universe.” James Madison

“We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this. I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall secede in this political building no better than the builders of Babel.” Benjamin Franklin

“The sacred writings of mankind are not to be rummaged for among old parchments or musty records. They are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature by the hand of Divinity itself, and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power.” Alexander Hamilton

“Of all dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.” George Washington

“God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are a gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, and that His justice cannot sleep forever.” Thomas Jefferson

“It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.” Abraham Lincoln.

I hope you have been given some ideas and encouragement to plan your next family holiday as a special time of sharing with your family. As the years go by your children will appreciate these traditions you have laid in their memories and heart.

Review & Giveaway: Naturally Healthy Cuisine: Real Food for Real Families by Shonda Parker and Vickilynn Haycraft.

Do you want to eat healthy and provide nutritious food for your family but don’t know where to start? Do you wonder how you could get your children and husband to eat the healthy food you would put on the table? Naturally Healthy Cuisine could be the book for you! Written by Shonda Parker and Vickilynn Haycraft, two mom’s with years of study about healthy eating, and best of all, real life experience in preparing food that their families will eat. I was impressed with a concise but thorough overview the importance of healthy food, nutritional value, vitamins, and minerals in our daily lives. The authors then wrote a excellant chapter on creating a real food pantry. Growing up we always had a food pantry and I can tell you the list of ideas they give is very helpful.

For those of you who are new to healthy cooking there is a chapter to get you started: Help for the Cooking-Challenged Homemaker. In this chapter Shonda and Vickilynn go through the steps of changing your habits, learning new cooking skills, and provide a number of good recipes to get you started. This book is chock full of recipes I can’t get wait to get started making. I’m especially interested in Heritage recipes and the “It’s a Keeper” recipes. You can start out with crock pot recipes and work your way up to the more complicated breads and egg rolls.

One complaint I have with some healthy eating cookbooks is the recipes are just beyond what a normal American family could easily transition to. I’m sorry; my husband will not turn up at the table for a tofu and raw veggies meal anytime soon. With Naturally Healthy Cuisine: Real Food for Real Families the title is true. From recipes like Baked Oatmeal, Orange Honey Chicken Salad, Beef and Barley Soup, and Shepherd’s Pie the transition to healthier eating will be possible.

I have been a fan of Shonda Parker for sometime. With her wonderful books like Naturally Healthy Woman, Mommy Diagnostics, and Naturally Healthy Pregnancy I was happy to read some common sense, Christian based health advise and counsel. To my delight Naturally Healthy Cuisine has turned up as a another winner from two authors I respect. Now you have the chance to enjoy this in your home!

Girl's Modest Swimsuits

This is my third list to share on modest swimsuits and swimwear. This one is for girls. The Modest Mom may not be in agreement with the entire contents of each site listed. It is left to your discernment to glean what will be of help to you and your family. Each family has different ideas as to what is modest swimwear. These postings will not be addressing what is or what is not modest with swimsuits.

It is possible to buy a swimsuit that looks modest on top but you may want to be more covered on the bottom. You could then buy some swim trunks or a swim skirt to wear over the swimsuit and make it more modest. This is one idea to share. You could wear a swimsuit with your own pair of shorts over the top. Check the clothing policies if you will be swimming in a pool. Many pool owners will not allow clothing shorts. If there is a company you can recommend, or a business you own yourself to be added to the list please leave a comment with the name and link to the company. We will consider that site to be added to the resource list. Thank You.

Review and Giveaway of Bummas Cloth Wipes

While some Dads I know are horrified at the thought of cloth wipes, I personally think if you are going to cloth diaper, using cloth wipes just make sense! They are so easy to just toss into the diaper pail along with the dirty diaper. Plus they create a fun job for toddlers to sort and stack into a pile, giving them something to do while mama folds the diapers!

Bummas sent me a package of the Wild Wipes to try, and I must say that they are my favorite wipes! When I first received them I thought they would be on the small side, but after using them I realized that they made the size just perfect! It fits into my diaper warmer great, and because the terry cloth is such high quality they work really well in cleaning off little bottoms!

The wipes come in a package of 10, and they have five different color combinations to pick from! I like that they are made in the USA. If you are in search of some good cloth wipes, I would suggest Bummas! I see these holding up a long time for me.

Buy It!
You can buy a package of Bummas Wipes for $16.99.

Win It!
Bummas is graciously giving away a package of wipes in the winner's choice of colors! To enter, go to the website and pick out what color you would like, and leave a comment letting me know.

Review and Giveaway of Gro Baby Diaper!

I have cloth diapered all of my babies, some with better success than others mainly because of the cloth diapers I had. It seems like every year the cloth diapers get better and better! One of the latest cloth diapers to come out on the market is the Gro Baby One Size Cloth Diaper.

This cloth diaper has been designed with a nifty shell that you snap in soaker pads made from organic cotton material. You also are sent a booster pad for heavier wetters. When your soaker is wet, simply unsnap it and snap in a clean soaker, using your shell over again. Simple and easy! The diaper is designed to fit a newborn, infant, or toddler using the snap system to adjust it as needed.

I tried this diaper out on both my 5 month old, and my 2 year old. For my 5 month old, just using the soaker pad was enough, I didn't need the booster pad. Strangely enough I didn't have to adjust the snaps smaller for my 5 month old. It honestly fits both of them perfect without changing anything.

When I put it on my 2 year old, I needed the booster pad also so she wouldn't leak.

The only thing negative I noticed about this diaper is that the stains don't come out of it as easily as my microfiber ones. I'm guessing that is because it is made from organic cotton, which is really good for your babies!

Buy it!
You can buy a Gro Baby Diaper from Wee Little Changes for $24.95

Win It!
Wee Little Changes is giving one Gro Baby Diaper away to one of our readers! To enter, go to Wee Little Changes and pick out one cloth diaper you would like to try!

Menu Plan for Week of June 14th

Last night we had a doozy of a storm. Unlike some other person I know, I don't sleep soundly through the night with a storm raging. I was hoping our new dog, Molly, was getting in her igloo dog house for shelter. We have a culvert running in the back of our yard. It has been filled to capacity the past week, and threatening to flood over at various times. I do enjoy opening the back deck door and listening to the sound of the water flowing by. Another benefit of all this rain is I haven't needed to water the flowers or garden. I hope each of you have a blessed week!

Modest Maternity & Nursing Swim Suits

I love to go swimming. My grandparents lived in Tampa, Florida for a number of years after they retired. We would go down to visit them as a family, or I would fly down and visit them myself. There are some beautiful beaches and more swimming pools than I had ever seen in Florida. I have come to the conclusion that I enjoy the clean pools over the Tampa Bay or Gulf of Mexico to swim in. Through the years I did make another discovery. It can be difficult to find modest swimwear!

My favorite website that had a listing of modest swimsuits has been deleted, so I decided to do some research and come up with my own list. I put together list for Modest Maternity and Nursing Swimsuits, Modest Swim Suits, Girl's Modest Swimsuits, and Men and Boys Swim Trunks and Shirts. I will be posting the list of these different resources over the next few days.

I'll begin with some companies I found that offer modest maternity and nursing swim suits.
The Modest Mom may not be in agreement with the entire contents of each site listed. It is left to your discernment to glean what will be of help to you and your family. Each family has different ideas as to what is modest swimwear. These postings will not be addressing what is or what is not modest with swimsuits.

All Day Charlotte mason Seminar Review and Giveaway!

If you don't homeschool, you might be disappointed thinking this giveaway does not apply to you. I would think again! The all day Charlotte Mason Seminar DVD set is hands down, the absolute best thing I have heard in a long time, and it covers lots of basic ideas that could be used by anyone, whether your child goes to public, private or is homeschooled. But I'm guessing that a lot of my readers homeschool. :-)

Simply Charlotte Mason is a website designed by two homeschooling families who have a love of homeschooling after the style of a former schoolteacher from the 1800's, Charlotte Mason. I was homeschooled through high school, and my Mother used this method all through high school to teach me. When my oldest (who is 6) was a baby, I decided that textbooks would be the way to go. I wanted structure and I didn't trust myself that I could pull together a good enough curriculum myself if I wanted to teach using a Charlotte Mason style. This past year I have really changed my tune, as Mosiah and I have been spending time learning the basics of education. I see now the beauty of the Charlotte Mason way, which consists of short lessons, real living books instead of dry textbooks, letting your children spend a lot of time outside (I really see the beauty of this with two boys who are 6 and 4. They could live outside if I let them!). Charlotte wanted children to discover the world around them, and not be spoon fed all the education they needed, but to be guided and encouraged in discovering the mysteries and wonders of this earth themselves.

I was so excited when Simply Charlotte Mason agreed to send me a copy of their All Day Charlotte Mason Seminar DVD set. I was hoping it would keep my interest, and be helpful as I start my journey. Let me tell you ladies, this has FAR exceeded my hopes! I have told some of my friends all about this set, and will be sharing with every homeschool Mom I know the fact that Simply Charlotte Mason is coming to my area in August and I want to go hear her give this talk in person, even when I own the DVD set!

Sonya Shafer is the woman who presents these talks, and she is an excellent speaker! My Mom and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this set together, as Shonya has a very engaging way of keeping your attention, and just presenting ideas in a way that makes you want to jump up and down and get all excited about going home to jump in and train your children in good habits, and start homeschooling them!

There are four different DVDs in the set. Some of the topics she covers in the DVD set are:
Introducing who Charlotte Mason was herself, and the vision she had for parents and children. How to actually teach different school subjects, highlighting each subject individually, geography, Art, Handicrafts and Life Skills, Poetry, Bible, Scripture Memory, Spelling, Math, Copywork, Composition, Foreign Language, Science, Nature Study, Music, Literature, and English Grammar! The last DVD talks about Habits, what habits are important for our children to learn and how to teach them.

I would highly suggest going to the Simply Charlotte Mason website and looking around. They are so generous, and have quite a few free e books available on their site, and an active forum where you can discover a lot by reading through the questions and answers.

Buy It!
You can buy this DVD Set from Simply Charlotte Mason website for $26.95-$54.95 (Depends on how many items in the set you get).

Win It!
Simply Charlotte Mason is generously offering one of our readers to win a copy of the All Day Charlotte Mason DVD set!! To enter to win, tell me one thing about this DVD set interests you in watching it.

Hana Professional Flat Iron Review and Giveaway!

I was delighted when Misikko agreed to send me a flat iron to review. The best part? It is PINK!! What girl would not like a hair tool that is pink? There is no end to the brands of flat irons out there. I had never heard of the Hana flat iron, but I was eager to try it as I knew based on the price it had to be better than a Walmart brand flat iron.

I tried it out on my Mom and Sister's hair, and then I had a friend who cuts my hair try it out. She taught me how to use better. Since I have very thick hair I have to take really small sections to straighten. It worked perfect when she used it. She straightened my hair and then cut it. I really like how it turned out!

My Mother in law has course, curly hair that she is never happy with. She had it cut yesterday, and I straightened only the top part for her, and she was delighted with how it looked.

The important thing to consider when buying a flat iron is that it needs to be all ceramic. That way it does not scorch your hair. You don't have to go over and over a spot again, since the ceramic heats up enough to straighten it with one try. For anyone looking to buy a flat iron I would suggest the Hana flat iron! And of course in pink. :-)
